this is like 5min after i have just ended class.
just attended this module from Faculty of Human Movement and Exercise Science, called the Psychosocial Aspect of Human Movement and Exercise Science
rushed over on my bike to the psychology lab to blog this.
fully aware of my sporadic short term memory, i'll surely forget about this later.
we were just covering the last lecture on Sport Spectator (anyway, much of the course is like Health Psych and Social Psych... recurring theories)
and we were touching on the topic of sport team identification.
We just covered Terror Management Theory (TMT), and Social Identity theory (SIT), marvelling on the similarities between the motives of identification as suggested by the theories.
To summarise:
Everyone has a personal identity and a social identity which forms their self concept.
Personal id = own attitude, choices, preferences
Social id= identification with social categories eg. i'm a liverpool fan, i'm an NUS student.
we are motivated to have consistent and positive self-concept.
therefore we are motivated to have consistencies in our social id too.
which explains why if you are a Man U fan, and i openly attack man u, you will be offended because i'm treading on something you identify with, and you want to feel good abt what you identify with.
2nd:
Subjective Uncertainty Reduction Theory.
Subjective uncertainty is an uncomfortable state that is associated with fear and anxiety. we obtain certainty of ourselves via social consensus, i.e. our social catergories, our group membership.
What's impt here is that
Strong group identification enhances depersonalisation and adherence to group prototypes (group norms).
In layman, we feel more assimilated into the group, more comfortable with the group, and we tend to display more of the group norms. AND naturally, we feel GOOD about the group!
and these increases emotional attachment to the group!
adapting these chunks of theory and obeservations into SWAPS.
take a look at 17th comm and 18th comm, there are distinctively stronger personalities in the group, and group coherence hasn't been particularly strong until towards the end of FOC.
I'm suggesting that we haven't done enough to assimilate everyone into the committee. Team building wasn't a prime issue, or at least wasn't well done at the start of 17th and 18th comm. What worked for us was that at the end of each FOC, you have the results --> groups of pple who identify strongly with each other and derive joy from being part of the group.
Groups that i know of:
(The 15th comm San Mao, Aud and folks)
(The 17th comm FOC Programmers)
(The 18th comm FOC Progballs)
among others.
(how many times have you seen programmers take photos together for every swaps event? and hang out together at settler's?)
i'm writing this to promote team building efforts for the 19th comm right from the start.
for the start of any team,
1. i think we need to toughen up the group identity, through maybe Induction Program (chalet, new comm-organised BBQ).
2. We need to equip them with necessary skills, in the broad category of Management, Interpersonal, and Technical skills. (i have talked to Shaun Goh b4, his father is a management trainer, and i would be very interested to invite him down to give the new comm some managment-sharing-session)
3. development is also built on past milestones. the new comm, esp this new comm needs a session where the development of swaps should be lectured to them. give them a breakdown on the milestones in the 15th - 18th comm, what worked for each comm, and what each comm thrived on. and then we could also explain Key events that swaps have organised.
4. you dun have to have 1 person to do all these. find the most suitable person to do the various parts. eg, audrey / desmond can do the history part, shaun's dad for the managemet trg, technical skills - computer ask jean, camps ask programmers, interpersonal skills - social work majors, or even Sudha Nair, (just ask her to share!) and so forth (dun you just love arrowing? ha)
remember that if group work have started much earlier, pple are going to find support for each other's efforts early in their office, they are going to have better decisions because more alternatives were considered and evaluated, they are going to have pride and confidence in their decision because they have strong identification with each other as a group (i.e they stand by each other).
Expand on our past successes and experience.
And i'm hungry. 4omin of typing and brainstorming. gosh~
i'm hoping that what i said helps.
can someone ask pple like Audrey, Sanmao, Ben, Shaun to read this entry also.
i'm hoping that they can jumpstart some of my suggestions while i'm still away in perth!
ha (ultimate arrow)
oh those interested in sport psychology, you can try UWA. the Faculty of Human Movement and Exercise Science (HMES) is dedicated to sports. Sport Psych is done from 3rd year onwards. first 2 years are groundwork and foundations about human body and science of exercise that physiotherapists, sports personnels need. can someone tell michelle the swimmer that? ha

so what has happened to me?
i'm a tall thin scratchy guy living on 50 Tareena St in Nedlands (suburb)
happy to ride my bike (which a friend very kindly lent me), to sch everyday.
but of cos it isn't exactly very shiok also as you get really cold wind on your whole body as you wheeze past everyone.
even worse on nights that i return to sch to go library or 24lab
usually can't feel my hands after that.
so w/o internet at home, what do i do?
basically i have a relatively short timetable even though i'm overloading.
5 units (i.e. modules) is way too tough for some aussies? yes 4 is the standard
at about 6, in the first few weeks, i'm always in the kitchen, observing how my 2 housemates cook. yes they are singaporeans, both guys.
and sometime like 2 weeks ago, i'm sort of independently cooking already.
that's by far my pride.
but of cos need lots of polishing.
winter's fluctuations is quite unpredictable.
no tv... so cannot look out for weather.
quite a few times i get caught in the rain liao...
really freezing rain...
even got wind it's really cold liao...
dun even think... there's no snow... you need subzero temp to get snow.
but the day's getting warmer now.. around 20degrees, night usually drop to 8 then usually 5 in the 2am time.
well... i've sort of adapted... and learnt when to wear more.. and when to use the windbreaker.
and doing our grocery shoppings.
with no car.. so the 3 of us... lugged Yuanchang's 65 litre backpack... and each of them carried bags... we go to the CHEAPER places to get our "as-long-as-possible-supply" (eg, meat 1 month amount)
that means we walk damn far and around just to get the cheaper stuff. ha
never appreciated mum.
NOW i will.
i can share in the cooking!!!!
and when i'm back, i'm gonna follow mum on sun morn to see how she gets grocery.
indulge in all the tricks of the trade.
gosh... i'm increasingly finding myself getting excited when i shop for groceries and for things to use in my household
coping ok with sch work.
cos not really impt to me, since i do not need to transfer my grade back.
i JUST HAVE TO PASS IT.
jealous? too bad.
muahahahha
while this mentality is corroding my perfectionistic thoughts, i think i dun mind the lesser time spent on studies to learn more about living away from home.
so far... perth has been good.
finally learnt to deal with shops bloody closing at 6pm
there's no where to go in the night.
well... i appreciate the sceneries and nature.
nature tells me that you can't get far w/o a car.
thankfully... i have some friends who have been helping me a lot.
makes me better settled in.
thanks
how are all of you?
i'm still concerned about what's happened back at home.
esp with swaps.
keep me updated people.
and learn to live your life fulfillingly!
ha... singapore has lots to miss still
first of all... you people.
ha
regards.
